Your First 6 Weeks Postpartum: What No One Tells You

Welcome to the 4th Trimester


You’ve just had a baby — congratulations! While everyone’s asking how the baby is, few ask how you’re doing. The truth is, the first 6 weeks postpartum (also known as the fourth trimester) can be physically demanding, emotionally draining, and surprisingly overwhelming.

1. You’ll Bleed (A Lot) — and That’s Normal

Postpartum bleeding, called lochia, can last up to 6 weeks. It’s your body shedding everything it held during pregnancy — blood, mucus, and tissue. The bleeding starts heavy and gradually lightens.

2. Breastfeeding Isn’t Always Easy

3. You’ll Be Super Emotional (and That’s OK)

Hormones are crashing. Sleep is rare. You may cry without knowing why — and that’s called the baby blues. If sadness lingers longer than two weeks or feels too heavy, it may be postpartum depression, and you should talk to your doctor.

✅ Tip: Journaling, gentle walks, or connecting with other moms can help lighten the load.



4. Sleep Deprivation Hits Hard

The phrase “sleep when the baby sleeps” is easier said than done, but rest whenever you can. You’re not lazy — your body is recovering from a major physical event.

5. Your Body Will Feel Different

You may still look pregnant. You might feel sore “down there.” And your belly could feel like jelly. Give yourself time — your body is incredible, and it deserves patience.

7. Your Baby Feeds and Poops Nonstop

Newborns feed 8–12 times a day and poop just as often. Expect unpredictable sleep, frequent diaper changes, and lots of spit-up.


✅ Tip: Keep a "baby station" with diapers, wipes, nipple cream, and burp cloths in every room for easy access.
